Olympic Stadium and Westfields: an amazing day out!

Last Sunday we were treated to a day out at the first ever event at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, next to the Westfields shopping centre. The Olympic Gold Challenge event was run for schools who had taken part in the Gold Challenge, sending pupils and teachers to run on the track and join a parade. The Olympics organisers benefitted from a practice run at the opening ceremony parade, and the children got a unique opportunity to say they won a race on the Olympic track! I was watching from only 18 rows back but I have to say that, …

At Peace: The Photo Gallery

Mummy got some unexpected peace yesterday morning. When I woke up I read my books as usual. At 8am, my usual holiday hour for bursting into Mummy’s room and declaring up time, I got out of bed and tidied my room. (Mummy told me I had to the previous night, so I did). At 8.05am I got distracted and played with my Barbies. For nearly an hour. When I finally went to get Mummy up (Daddy had left at 5.30 for the office!) I collected the Bug on my way. This is what his clock said: When I asked him …

If you give a girl 5 minutes…. Wot So Funee?

If you give a girl 5 minutes she could: Make a new potion for her “potion club” …… using bubble bath, soap, toothpaste, lipgloss, body glitter …. and nail polish Clean up the sink with toilet paper….. and try to wash the evidence down the plug hole Create a swimming pool for her Barbies….. and forget to switch the tap off Have a paddle… Try to mop up an inch deep of water on the bathroom floor….. with toilet paper Admit to her mistake….. and not be able to keep a straight face Today is Wot So Funee? but last …

Rock Choir at Wembley Stadium supporting McFly!

Well. I thought I had seen it all when I joined 7,500 members of Rock Choir at Wembley Arena last April, but today surpassed all expectations. Mummy and 1500 of her mates from Rock Choir performed at Wembley Stadium, right there on the very pristine grass, right before my idol Harry. What do you mean, Harry who? The Harry, of course, the one from Strictly Come Dancing; oh and he’s in McFly too, by the way. It was, by all accounts, a very emotional day. The excitement, as lots of ladies (one of them the Bug’s teacher, don’t you know!), …

Extreme Close-Up

My Silent Sunday this week was an awesome shot (and I don’t normally like to big myself up, but it was awesome). I had lots of great responses about how amazing my iPhone was for getting such an incredible shot. And I had this comment from MyMumdom: Oh bugger! How did that slip me by? Thinking cap on, Mummy took another look at that photo and remembered what she had actually been trying to capture when she accidentally got a great close-up of a bumblebee. We were noticing how many different varieties of daffodil there are on our walk to …

How to Blog – Video Tutorial: Wot So Funee?

I am thrilled to welcome back an old favourite. This type of post, showcasing the funny things our children say and write, was the very reason I began this blog, and what better way to bring back the #funee than with a video tutorial on how to blog and use social media. Ladies and Gents, I give you – GG, all her own work: Do your kids make you laugh? Click here to enter your link and view this Linky Tools list… <a href=”http://staging.actuallymummy.co.uk/wot-so-funee” title=”Wot So Funee?” target=”_blank”><img src=”http://staging.actuallymummy.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/WotSoFuneeBadge.gif” alt=”Wot So Funee?” style=”border:none;” /></a> I am trilled and elated to …

Cakes for book-lovers

Alien's love underpants cake

Have you ever heard of an Edible Book Festival? No, neither had we, but when Zoe, at Playing by the book announced she was hosting one on her blog, we headed straight over. Up for grabs was an original drawing by Emma Chichester Clark, of Blue Kangaroo fame, and all we had to do was make an edible representation of a favourite book. Well, we didn’t have to be asked twice, and immediately set about baking a cake representation of the Sword in the Stone, having recently enjoyed King Arthur and the Mighty Contest from the Crazy Camelot series by …

Are Linky’s a thing of the past?

Friends, I have bad news. Sunfun is not well. It started off quite hale and hearty, then succumbed to the affliction that is Silent Sunday. It spluttered its way through for a while, laughter being the best medicine and all that, but in the end the virus took a hold, the Silent bacteria grew, and this linky could no longer resist the onslaught of flashlights and zoom lenses. Today the #sunfun linky will breathe its last breath and become a thing of the past. Don’t worry, we’re not bitter; the Lady of Silent Sunday is still our great friend, and …

366 Photography Project

It has been a week of fun and games. Some of them welcome, others not so much. First off, we trashed the house with Daddy whilst Mummy celebrated the birthday of her great friend Annie, with the help of some double chocolate brownie after-eight mint cupcakes (yes you read that right) made by @cheetahsinshoes. They were a huuuuuuuge success! The rest of the week has been spent appreciating the sunlight, sneaking into our hallway in the early mornings to catch the mirrors on Mummy’s mobile, drying the laundry in the breeze outside (simple pleasures), and coaxing the flowers out of …

It’s SunFun!

Friend, whilst having torch shone into her eyes by annoying little brother:Stop shining that light in my eyes Brother: But I’m torchering you! And here’s something else to make you laugh – on Monday Mummy is going to be on 3 Counties Radio, wittering to Nick Coffer, who sounds very lovey and professional. That’s bound to be funny. Tune in between 1pm and 2pm on 95.5fm to hear what stuff and nonsense she talks about, and then you’ll know what I have to put up with 24:7 😉 Now, did you write something funny this week? Stick a link in …

How to tie dye with natural colours

Tie dye done with natural colours

Our school is twinned with a school in the African town of Kano. Often during learning we talk about Kano, and the things that children learn there. Sometimes we look at photos of life there and the things which are typical of people in the town. Our teacher is quite spontaneous and loves to craft (once she filled an entire table with school glue and got us all to throw glitter at it to see if we could make a clear collage!) so when we got talking about photos we had of the people in Kano sitting around pits in …

72/366 Photos: A fashion show

Every year at school there is a fashion show, at which children get to model lots of different items, and parents get to lighten their cheque books after a rocking show and a glass of wine. This year I was selected for the year 2 end of show dance routine. We all wore the blue and white Mary Quant-style dress and delivered our hastily-rehearsed moves to the screams, yells and cheers of family and friends. I was so proud darling. You looked absolutely stunning, you got your moves all sorted, and you modelled with a gorgeous smile on your face. …

App of the Week! #SunFun

Daddy must have most of the available ‘daft-apps’ on his iPad; he is glued to it 24/7 and it goes everywhere with him (and I mean everywhere). There is even an app called Talking Poo, would you believe? But last week he discovered a free TRANSFORMERS Cyber Toy app for iPhone and iPad by Glu Games Inc; I guarantee you will want it. Check out the moves on this dude:   And here is Daddy’s painful attempt: The app is free, but I’m pretty sure you will end up paying the nominal fee for all of Bumblebee’s mates, so you …

A short story about self-harm

There was once a little girl with a temper. A bit like the girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead. She was helpful, kind (if a bit bossy), mature, supportive, funny and clever. She was an incredibly determined little girl, who learned things fast and loved to read. One day the little girl started piano lessons. She never wanted to practice, but her Mummy sat with her and they both played together. She got stuck a few times, because learning the piano is hard. When she got stuck she flew into such tempers that she cried, screamed, …

How children learn to read and write at school

I wrote a post recently about my loquaciousness and use of intricate words, and the irony of the fact that I don’t always know how to replicate them appropriately in my writing at school. I sailed through my reading bo0ks and declared myself a ‘speed-reader’ to my year 1 teacher. Mummy hasn’t known how to read with me, because I prefer to read by myself, or to be read to while my brain switches off: so not up for a challenge before bed! Last week Mummy was a school pupil herself when parents were invited in to discover the processes …

65/366 Photos (Well, a video actually)

Yesterday the weather was grim. It rained; it poured; and we were gobsmacked when eventually it snowed. Great big wet splodges of slush, splattered on the window pane as we gazed hopefully at the trampoline: Luckily for us, it was Mother’s day so we stayed home and ate, and played Slug in a Jug all day!

The Perfect Mother’s Day

Yesterday was Mother’s Day. You forgot, didn’t you? *Panic sets in across the parenting nation with thousands of Dads causing mass internet chaos as they rush to check online calendars.* Ok, it wasn’t really; but Daddy figured out that next weekend is Mother’s day, and that he is going to be in the USA at South By South West (SXSW) for a huge digital marketing conference. Guilt-stricken, he geared us up for the perfect Mother’s Day and calmly informed Mummy that her day off would be occurring one week early. So she got Apple and Gingerbread Muffins in bed with …

Apple Gingerbread Muffins Recipe

Daddy is a fan of baking on a Sunday morning, and he has been perfecting  his muffins for a few weeks now. For Mother’s Day he proposed a mesh of all his previous efforts, with the addition of some ginger, and came up with this, his best attempt yet at apple and gingerbread muffins. If you are more of a cupcake fan all you need do is whizz up some butter icing, flavour with lemon, and pop some diced crystallised ginger in there – YUM! You will need: 75g butter, melted 100g dark muscovado sugar 25g caster sugar 2 eggs …
