Work with me

Hi, I’m Helen, and I’m the writer here at Actually Mummy, as well as co-editor of award-winning family travel site Space In Your Case. I live just outside of London, in St Albans with my teenaged daughter Maddie, 10-year-old son Evan, and my marketing director husband Jason.

My background is in corporate management, with annual turnovers of over £60m, but when I had my children I quickly realised that I needed a more flexible way of working. I took an extended maternity leave, and studied for a degree in psychology

I started Actually Mummy in 2011, when I figured out that talking to the four walls and a baby was never going to be enough. Since then I have earned a reputation as a professional and innovative writer, crafting stories and video on high profile brand campaigns such as Mark Warner, Universal Studios, Heinz and Virgin Trains. I now work full time on my own blogs, as well as on commissions for diverse websites, including Intrepid Travel, and Tefal. My work and family life has also led to some high profile speaking opportunities at Parliament, and with the BBC – which I’ve loved!

Awards and Accolades!

I’ve always written with a sense of humour, so it was a huge thrill to win the Laugh award in 2013 at my first BritMums Brilliance in Blogging awards. I went on to win Best Schooldays Blog at the MAD Blog Awards in 2012, 2014, and 2015 – I’m not sure what happened in 2013, maybe I was in the loo when they called my name..? 😉 I also won an Outstanding Contribution Award at the MADs in 2015 for my work on raising awareness about having a child with type 1 diabetes link.

I’ve been Blog of the Day on Mumsnet several times over the last few years, most recently for this post. link I’m currently number 23 on the top UK Parent Blogs list, Tots 100.

What’s the story of your brand?

The best way for me to feature a brand is by telling a story that resonates with my readers. So I work with brands that I love, and that I know my followers will love too. Readers come to my blog for travel inspiration, teenage parenting support, fashion, and lifestyle reviews. Big or small, single Instagram sweater post to major travel campaign, get in touch link and let me know what you need.

I’ve previously featured my family in review video, but I’ve recently started to incorporate more ‘to-camera’ clips on my channels. Have a look:

Testimonials

Don’t just take my word for it – after all, I’ve got a vested interest! In case you need help deciding, here’s what some of my lovely brand managers have to say about me:

“It has been a pleasure working with Helen this past year. Her professionalism, friendliness and
creativity has helped us build our blogger outreach and create meaningful relationships within the
blogging community.” Emilia Berni, Mark Warner Holidays.

“We had the pleasure of Helen and her lovely family staying in one of our yurts over the Summer
(2014). From the start, Helen was incredibly professional in her communication, and was really
flexible in accommodating the restricted dates we had available, despite having a busy family
schedule with school and work. Helen thoroughly immersed herself and her family into the Glamping
experience, cooking on the campfire, exploring the local area, and even documenting some tips on
what to do when it rains (which it did during her trip!). After the trip, Helen turned around the review
really quickly, with a thoroughly thought out and well written article, full of anecdotes and family
pictures – really capturing the experience in a way that really shows potential guests exactly what it is
like staying with us. Helen was very proactive in promoting the review once published, across her
social media platforms. In terms of results, we have seen a rise in our social media followers, and
have a fantastic review to link to from our website, which really helps paint a picture of what it is like to
stay at Somerset Yurts.Thank you Helen, it was such a pleasure to meet and work with you. I hope
we can work together again in the future.” Emma Cavill, Somerset Yurts.
