The fundraising force that is Team Honk has issued a blogging prompt in honour of International Women’s Day next Saturday 8th March. An inspiring woman; someone you admire, who changes your outlook, who you would work hard to be more like. I struggled, to be honest. In life I am influenced by many friends, they inspire me to try new things: better photography, running, dancing, writing. In blogging there are multiple women who support me, prompt me, and give me new ideas. But one woman who makes me want to be a better person? For whom I am prepared to …
Our school stages a non-uniform “come as your favourite book character” day every year on World Book Day. In 2013 World Book Day will be on Thursday 7 March, and the Bug has been pondering his costume for a while. Would he wear my cast-off from a previous year? His answer was no, on the basis that not only has he never read the Faraway Tree (I know, right?!!), but that the saucepans have not fared too well for their 2 year secondment to the loft… So we were stuck, wondering what the best character would be. We don’t have …
As she turned the corner into Foubert’s Place and laid eyes on the shop, she stopped. “Oh, that’s the one,” she breathed. “That was my cake.” Only it wasn’t. The white chocolate wedding cake in the Choccywoccydoodah window had been the ultimate in cake fantasy as she had planned her wedding 13 years earlier. But despite the hours spent designing the colour and style of the chocolate flower decorations, that cake had never been hers. There was a budget; a budget that allowed for the wine (obviously), the cloak (not the dress, it was never about the dress), and the …
At what age do children really start to make sense, do you think? Recently I have uttered very little in the way of #funee verbal errors. My writing has been logical, with good spelling, and sensible dénouement. Hence I am forced to feature my 5-year-old brother today, and his best friend: Bug: England is the capital of London Bug’s Friend: Wales is in the Kingdom of the United Bug: Manchester United? Bug: I’m having my birthday for camping! BF: Oh, I really wanted to miss you… Bug: Why is your Grandad old? Isn’t that the most disjointed conversation you’ve ever heard?? I have no idea what …
It has been a chilled out kind of holiday week. The weather has been kind enough, in parts, for us to spend time at the park (I have recently mastered the art of swinging, and can do it for hours); on the colder days we have sought the comfort of a sofa, a duvet, and tv food with friends. Mummy briefly escaped us for a London conference from Save the Children (more on that next week); and today, in between hailstorms, we cycled to a rather lovely pub for lunch, where I decimated a blossom tree in the name of …
Have you ever heard of an Edible Book Festival? No, neither had we, but when Zoe, at Playing by the book announced she was hosting one on her blog, we headed straight over. Up for grabs was an original drawing by Emma Chichester Clark, of Blue Kangaroo fame, and all we had to do was make an edible representation of a favourite book. Well, we didn’t have to be asked twice, and immediately set about baking a cake representation of the Sword in the Stone, having recently enjoyed King Arthur and the Mighty Contest from the Crazy Camelot series by …
It has been a week of fun and games. Some of them welcome, others not so much. First off, we trashed the house with Daddy whilst Mummy celebrated the birthday of her great friend Annie, with the help of some double chocolate brownie after-eight mint cupcakes (yes you read that right) made by @cheetahsinshoes. They were a huuuuuuuge success! The rest of the week has been spent appreciating the sunlight, sneaking into our hallway in the early mornings to catch the mirrors on Mummy’s mobile, drying the laundry in the breeze outside (simple pleasures), and coaxing the flowers out of …
Listography this week at Kate Takes 5 is Top 5 Cookbooks, and Mummy couldn’t resist. Here are the cookbooks in our house: We have lots. But funnily enough there are actually only 5 that she really uses. Good Housekeeping: it holds all the classic recipes from Sherry Trifle to Boeuf Bourgignon, from a Victoria Sponge to jointing and roasting a turkey. And the best ever orange and almond cake, containing a whole, boiled, puréed orange. It sounds odd, but it is lush! Full of rich casseroles, stodgy puds, and cosy soups – the best of which is Roasted Pumpkin with …
Once again I am taking part in the gorgeous Dear Beautiful Boy’s Inspired linky, but this time I am on a mission to create me a cake that could win me an original drawing by Emma Chichester Clark, the illustrator behind one of our favourite books, Blue Kangaroo. All I need is to get inspired to create an edible book! Hmmmm. “What,” you may ask, “is an edible book?” “Quite literally that!” would be my answer! The Edible Book Festival is being held on the lovely blog Playing By the Book, where we are invited to join in by creating …
It’s been a funny old week, during which Mummy neglected to take a picture every day, so possibly this weekly project post is turning into a 52 rather than a 366! Mummy got very excitable about booking herself into a seminar for Social Media Week London. She arrived early (check out the dates on the event brief and the travelcard) and was rather less excited. We visited all of our Grandparent’s, where the Bug demonstrated his newly acquired reading skills to Grandpa, and we fawned over Grandma’s lovely doggies! I played snow tricks on the Bug (he never fails to …
I could not do without pink. I could show you how much I love pink by photographing my bedroom, but having discovered Pinterest, I find there are so many more pink things that I could add to my collection. The feathers here are mine, mine, mine, but everything else is from lovely pink-lovers credited below 🙂 What inspires you? There is a linky below at Dear Beautiful Boy where you can join in! Hot Piggy Pink Shoes by Mytheresa. Bubblegum Dress from Etsy. Cake Pops via Flickr. Candy by Hostess Blog. I have been inspired to post my pink stuff …
To be eaten under controlled circumstances only. The best chocolate biscuit recipe in the world, ever. According to me 😉 ♥ (With Marshmallows, Cherries, Nuts, Broken Meringues, Glitter, Exploding Candy, and anything else you can think of!) ♥ ** Update! This recipe has started something of a craze! Take a look at the Facebook post and comments on it. Feel free to add your own suggestions – we’re always looking for ridiculous delicious additions to try out! We adapted this recipe from one we found in Sainsbury’s magazine. I say, adapted; what I really mean is doctored, embellished, played …
