Take a deep breath, and jump into the blue!

This time last year, the Bug was afraid of water. The weekly swimming lesson had to be tackled with a careful blend of patience, encouragement, tear-immunity, and McFlurry promises. If we could get him into the water without a tear falling, it would be brilliant; if the grumbling was allowed to take hold, an inconsolable wreck would be handed back 15 minutes later. So an element of trepidation hooked up with us as we hit the swimming pool on our Siblu holiday last July. We needn’t have worried: (Do watch to the end of this video; if you don’t have …

When a pet dies… 3:52

My best photo this week drew a lot of views and comments on Facebook. Like a lot of people we have taken full advantage of the snowy weather, throwing it, shaping it, lying in it, and sliding on it. We all went out for some fun, including our pets. But sadly we were having far too much fun to focus on our responsibilities. As we piled back indoors with rosy cheeks and sparkling eyes to burn our throats on steaming mugs of chocolate, we failed to notice that one of our party got left behind, forgotten, outside in the snow. …

Children reading 2:52

My favourite photo this week is an appalling shot really, but it is here not for its artistic merit, but for what it says to me. After Daddy does the bath Mummy comes up to read a bedtime story. However on this particular evening she was busy getting some or other adult-type dish into the oven. Curry, no doubt, or something else I would refuse to eat. She yelled up to ask if I would listen to the Bug read his schoolbook while we waited. She came up 10 minutes later to find us snuggled together in my den. “It’s …

One stylish outfit, endless moves…

I am a very lucky girl. Having seen fit to send me an outfit I never thought my mother would approve of for the MAD Blog Awards, River Island surprised me a few weeks ago with some winter warmers. They have come in pretty handy this weekend, as the temperatures dropped, and our festive spirits began to seep out of the loft, dusty with the promise of broken baubles and indecipherable Christmas cards. This is my chosen outfit for the grand decorating of the Christmas tree – festive, cheeky, a little bit sparkly, and totally cool. I wonder what the …

(Silent) Sunday… For Kerry

Silent Sunday comes early for Actually Mummy this week, as we take a moment at 10pm to celebrate Multiple Mummy, and send healing thoughts to her and her family. Neither is it silent on this occasion. How could it be…? Come back safe Kerry x

It was the Eighties! The Gallery

Mummy was recently asked to showcase her worst fashion disaster in the Sun newspaper. She was happy to do so, cognisant of the fact that it actually was rather tasteless, but confident that the excuse of the eighties would more than compensate for her inappropriate flambuoyancy. The Sun editors changed her interview answers to portray her as “desperate Helen.” Mummy wasn’t that bothered; after all, she was pictured looking passable, in a dress she last wore 25 years ago, and had her age queried by a lot of people! This was Mummy, aged 21, thrilled with her home-made Diana-style ballgown …

Water Park: how to take awesome photos

It’s really easy. Point. Click. The subject matter does all the rest. Kids and water. Here is a bunch of random shots we took, at the truly awesome water park at Siblu’s Domaine de Kerlann holiday park in northern France.   We spent 5 of our 6 days in Brittany at the water park. On the day we left the park to go sightseeing, all they could talk about was getting back to the Siblu water park. We were given our Siblu holiday free of charge so we could write some reviews, but the fun was generated purely from within. …

Trains? Planes? Automobiles? His first Demolition Derby…

He really didn’t want to go. Under pressure he picked a favourite caravan. He cried when it was the first to get smashed up by the other cars on the track. It was raining. He didn’t see the point. But his Daddy loves stock cars. Here’s how he coped with his first Demolition Derby… This post was inspired by the Gallery at Sticky Fingers
